This Online HF Radio Course allows you to learn everything you need to know about using HF Radios, at your own pace and whenever you like.

At the end of this course, you will understand HF Radio functions and equipment, how to communicate with other vessels and radio stations, and be able to call for help in an emergency. You will also understand how to use various safety equipment you may have onboard, and maintaining communication equipment onboard your boat.

After you have enrolled, Above & Beyond Boating will send your login details for the course. The course takes around 4 hours to complete.

On completion of the course, you will have the opportunity to complete an exam and get your HF Radio Licence (LROCP Long Range Certificate of Proficiency). This will also allow you to apply for an MMSI number for your vessel.

Getting your radio licence

To get your HF Radio Licence, you must complete an exam.

Completing a radio exam

To attain your radio licence (certificate of proficiency), you must complete an exam. Above & Beyond Boating has been approved by the Office of Maritime Communications to offer you a  remote assessment. The remote assessment is conducted via a video call and has two components to the radio exam:

  1. Theory assessment - 50 multiple-choice questions. This is a closed-book assessment, and the required pass mark is 70% (35 questions correct).
  2. Practical assessment - a short observation where you will be asked to demonstrate your ability to use a radio and how to make routine and distress calls. You can book in an exam time using their online calendar.

Before sitting your exam, you will be required to pay a licence fee ($89) directly to the Office of Maritime Communications which marks the exam papers and distributes licences. This licence fee is not included in the online course enrolment. Your certificate of proficiency does not expire.

You can apply to complete a remote assessment when you have enrolled in the online course. A remote assessment is $100. The assessment is scheduled using an online calendar. The $100 remote assessment fee is paid when you schedule your assessment.  Currently, the Office of Maritime Communications is taking 15 working days to issue a licence after your assessment has been completed.

Qualification

On sitting and passing the exam, you will be issued with a Long Range Operators Certificate of Proficiency - LROCP (formerly MROVCP) from the Office of Maritime Communications (O.M.C.).

Your certificate does not expire. The certificate fee is $89 (as of January 2018), which is payable directly to the O.M.C. when you sit your exam. The exam fee is not included as part of the course.
