How to Deploy a Retriever Float & Lifesling Effectively
In an emergency at sea, swift and correct use of safety equipment can make all the difference. Here’s a simple guide to deploying a retriever float and Lifesling to ensure you're prepared if the situation arises.
Steps to Deploy the Retriever Float & Lifesling:
-
Identify the Emergency:
As soon as someone goes overboard, act immediately to prevent panic and reduce the time in the water. Alert the crew and maintain visual contact with the person in the water. -
Position the Boat:
Maneuver the vessel downwind or into a safe position to ensure the float can drift towards the person without tangling in the boat’s propeller or lines. - Release the Retriever Float & Lifesling:
- Open the stow bag containing the equipment.
- Throw the retriever float and Lifesling toward the person in the water, aiming to get it as close to them as possible.
- The float should trail the Lifesling, allowing the individual to grab onto either.
-
Circle Back Slowly:
If the first throw misses, turn the boat gradually and try again. Maneuvering without creating wake ensures the sling remains easy to access. -
Assist the Person Back Aboard:
Once they grab the Lifesling, use the attached line to gently tow them back toward the boat. If necessary, use a block-and-tackle system or halyard to lift them safely onboard. -
Check for Injuries:
After retrieval, assess the person’s condition and provide any necessary first aid or medical care promptly.
Stay Prepared
Familiarizing yourself and your crew with these steps ensures a quick response during emergencies. Regular safety drills can also build confidence in using the retriever float effectively.
