Freedom by name, freedom by nature; our new offshore coastal jacket gives you the freedom to sail wherever and whenever you want, no matter what the environment throws at you. Designed on the back of our 50 plus years in sailing innovation the Freedom range has been created with the sailor in mind to offer serious offshore and coastal protection. We speak to the design team to get the facts and features that make this jacket the best in class.
“The real talking point of the Freedom jacket has to be the OPTIVISION hood and face visor. This technology is taken straight out of our Transocean collection and is the only offshore jacket to offer this technology for full facial protection and improved peripheral vision. This is technology that could save your life – imagine your hood up during bad weather – having the peripheral vision of the OPTIVISION is crucial when you need to be alert and aware of your surroundings.”
“Being seen by night is also crucial to safety. Henri Lloyd’s innovative Photo-luminescent reflectors feature on the shoulders, storm flap and hood of the Freedom. These reflectors represent cutting edge technology in energy-zero and self-sustaining light sources; by day they absorb UV light (sunlight or artificial) and by day night this energy is released, creating a luminescence improving visibility on those night time excursions.
“The Freedom collection is constructed in our high performance TP2 fabric – TP2 is a coated fabric technology which is twenty times more waterproof than the British standard – this paired with our seam taping technology means we guarantee that the Freedom range is 100% waterproof and wind proof whilst remaining highly breathable. Double, Dartex staggered and adjustable cuffs at the sleeve, along with run off channels at the pockets and zip ensure that spray doesn’t makes its way through the zip holes or down your sleeves when adjusting the sails. Don’t forget your H-therm base layers and elite therm mid layer to get maximum breathability and comfort out on the water.”
Constructed from the same high performance material as the Freedom jacket, the Freedom Hi-fit Salopette compliments the jacket perfectly. The two way storm flap and drainage channels keep you dry when the weather is harsh, it’s ergonomic design features bat wing waist adjusters and is articulated for ease of movement – crucial to gain that tactical advantage when racing or but just as important when cruising. A quick access fast draining leg pocket ensures anything you need is just within reach.”

It was an epic battle right from the starter’s gun with Comanche, the new and very sexy US built 100-foot supermaxi, leading the 2014 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race fleet out of the heads in record making speed. History-maker Wild Oats XI, hotly rebranded with Audi Australia sponsorship, was quick on the chase and held a tough pursuit for much of the race bringing it home strong to take her 8th line honours win in a decade. Comanche finishing in second place only 50 minutes later – a massive effort for this debutante beauty of a boat.

And on board both of these majestic machines was Henri Lloyd wet weather gear, protecting the crew from all the elements ocean racing throws forward. Needless to say this was a proud moment, not only for these amazing crews, but also for world renowned marine technical brand Henri Lloyd.
Over almost a decade long partnership with Wild Oats X and XI, Henri Lloyd wet weather gear has been there to protect the crew right across their 8 line honours wins and a bunch of history making results in RSHYR and their many other pursuits. Fran Hahlos, brand manager of Henri Lloyd in Australia, commented that “it is such a huge honour to be able to work with these amazing boats and inspiring crews. These guys really know how to push the limits”. These partnerships demand high performance and innovative technology. The crews need strength, ultimate protection, ease of moment, reduced weight and of course comfort to which Henri Lloyd has stepped up to the plate to provide the top of the range gear.
During 2014 Henri Lloyd launched the highly innovative Elite Offshore range which is the lightest, most breathable offshore gear on the global market. It exclusively utilises a unique extreme performance Gore-Tex fabric that is 30% lighter and 20% more breathable than any best of class predecessor. This is real game-changer technology, the reduced weights and increased breathability are not just laboratory jargon but can be sensed by the wearer. Fatigue can be lessened and performance enhanced through the fabrics technological achievements.
And by transferring the Gore™ Micro-Grid technology from Ocean garments the garment is not only tougher and more abrasion resistant but due to the low topography of the woven lining the outer layer glides easily over mid layers to reduce “interlayer grab” which makes donning and doffing easier and reduces fatigue in wear. Throw in exclusive Henri Lloyd features such as the Optivision Hood in which the transparent TPU windows allow wider peripheral vision without compromising protection for the face, and you end up with a must-have offshore racing or cruising garment. This is the new phase of marine garment technology and it is exclusive to Henri Lloyd.
Paul Strzelecki, CEO of Henri Lloyd explained, “Our core mission is Intelligent Innovation, at Henri Lloyd our focus is on enhancing comfort and therefore performance on the water. The new Elite Offshore range sets new standards in both of these areas, it is the culmination of years of intensive development and we are proud of this range and are certain it will become the benchmark for high performance sailing equipment.”
Henri Lloyd 50 years of Pioneering Spirit are celebrating winning the 2013-2014 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, having been consistently near the top of the leader board for the majority of the race.
The yachts have raced over 40,000 nautical miles since the 12- strong matched fleet left St Katharine’s Dock, London in September 2013. There have been thrills and some spills along the way for the fleet including terrifying ordeals as well as many lighter moments.
Paul Strzelecki, Joint CEO of Henri Lloyd Ltd reflects on the race, "It's the first time we have sponsored an entry in a round the world race and for our race yacht – Henri Lloyd 50 years of pioneering spirit to win in such style is the icing on the cake”.
“We look forward to welcoming back our victorious skipper and crew on Saturday. It’s been an eventful race and I have been glued to the race tracker since the start last September. I can't help thinking about my late father Henri who founded Henri Lloyd and equipped Sir Robin back in the 60's, he would have loved this so much. I'm sure there is a big smile on his face as there is on mine”.
Henri Lloyd 50 years of Pioneering Spirit has notched up 5 race wins and 11 podium places during the race and have won valuable points in the various ocean sprints, keeping them consistently in the top half of the leader board and winning the race with 166.9 points.

And also the founder of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston himself, not only in his record setting non-stop single handed circumnavigation in 1968-69 but for many of his round the world challenges since.
